Electronic Waste Recycling & Brush Drop Off
The McHenry Township Road District is again partnering with the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County to offer recycling programs for McHenry Township residents. Brush, Branches and twigs must be no larger than 8 inches in diameter, and 10 feet maximum length. Grass clippings, leaves, rubbish, branches or logs containing dirt or debris will NOT be accepted. Your next opportunity to recycle is Saturday, October 19, 2024 from 8:00a.m. to 12:00 p.m., last opportunity before winter season. There will be NO drop off of recycling items during the week. Alternatives to Landscape Waste Accumulation
There are other alternatives to burning your landscape materials. For more information, click here. The Health Department encourages more environmentally sound alternatives to burning of landscape waste and recommends composting, mulching and native landscaping as possible alternatives to reduce/reuse landscape waste, click here for further information. The Village's residential refuse and recycling service includes the removal of up to 8 bags or cans of landscape waste per week. For more information visit LRS - Johnsburg.
Open Burning of Landscape Waste
Landscape waste may be burned on Saturdays and Sundays from dawn through dusk during Fall months of October and November. The burning of landscape waste is permitted only when winds are less than 10 mph. The burning site must be a minimum of 100’ from any principal structure and supervised at all times by an individual at least 18 years of age. A fire extinguisher, garden hose or water source must be available at the burning site. Prohibited at all times is the burning of manure, garbage, construction materials, litter, grass clippings (eff. 10/5/2021) and etc...on any property. We have seen and received multiple complaints of residents not complying with the ordinance, please be advised violators will be cited. Recreational fires and ceremonial fires are exempt but may not be larger than 3’x3’x3’ and cannot contain leaves, grass or shrubbery clippings. Click here for the requirements.
Halloween 2024 - Village of Johnsburg jurisdiction
What time can the vampires and ghouls collect their candy? Trick or Treating will take place this year on Thursday, October 31, 2024 from 3:00p.m. to 7:00 p.m. We urge everyone to be safe and respect households that choose not to participate. Johnsburg Post Prom Committee – Save the Date
The Johnsburg Post Prom Committee is hosting a Bowling and Bears in the Burg on Sunday, November 3, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Palace Bowl (3400 N. Richmond Rd). With their upcoming Bowling and Bears in the Burg Fundraiser, they hope to meet the fundraising goal of over $10,000 to aid in helping to keep the JHS kids safe on prom night. McHenry County has now expanded its transportation options for eligible McHenry County residents. MCRide Connect is a new on-demand, user-side subsidy program using transportation network (commonly known as rideshare) companies, like Uber and UZURV, to provide a new affordable transportation option for eligible residents in McHenry County. 2024 Public Works Projects
As you know, Illinois has two seasons - Winter and Construction Season. Along with the warmer weather comes the inconveniences that occur with road construction. To help you prepare, below is a summary of construction projects that will be taking place in Johnsburg. As the projects proceed, be prepared for delays and seek alternative routes whenever necessary.
- Sewer River Extension
- Linden Ave. road will be CLOSED between N. Chapel Hill Road and River Terrace Drive Road
- Road Closure; the attached exhibit indicates the Phase-1 traffic control to facilitate installation of steel casing under N. Chapel Hill Road. During the work, Linden Ave. will be closed between N. Chapel Hill Road and River Terrace Drive. Scope work has started, this is your notice/reminder and anticipated to take 1 week. During the Linden Avenue closure, River Terrace Drive and Linden Avenue traffic will be detoured to N. Chapel Hill Road via Weingart Road and Bay Road. Access from N. Chapel Hill Road to the business located at 3312 N. Chapel Hill Road will be maintained during the road closure. Residents will continue to have access to their homes, we request patience and apologize for any inconvenience.
- Linden Ave. road will be CLOSED between N. Chapel Hill Road and River Terrace Drive Road
- Hydrant Flushing Planning; proposed for October 2024, please be advised of notice, eBlast messages for specific subdivision will be disseminated.
- Public Works Road Maintenance; road patching and repairs in preparation for winter season.
- Public Works Right-of-Way Tree Trimming/Pruning in preparation for winter season, please pay attentions to signage and proceed cautiously during travels.

Please pay close attention to flaggers and construction signage, obey posted speed limits, and proceed cautiously while traveling in and around the work zones.
Holiday Magic 2024 – Mark your Calendars & Save the Date
The Holiday Magic Parade look ahead and developing further. The event, being held on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. will be traveling a new route. Click here for parade route details. Residents wishing to participate in the parade must register their vehicle, float or non-highway vehicle with the Village by December 6, 2024. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE REGISTERED IN ADVANCE. Entries not registered will not be permitted to participate in the parade. The total number of entries is needed in advance to ensure that provisions for adequate staging are made. All entries must be decorated in a holiday theme or with holiday lights. Alcohol is prohibited in the staging area and through the parade route and no candy or freebies can be thrown along the parade due to limited visibility.
