eBlast - JBPD Press Release "Crosswalk Safety" Alert
Crosswalk Safety for Drivers and Pedestrians
Both drivers and pedestrians play an important role in traffic safety. While the Village continues to invest in pedestrian improvements, and the Johnsburg Police Department continues to enforce traffic safety, our community needs your help, too. When we work together, Johnsburg’ roads are safer for everyone.
- Pedestrians' right-of-way at crosswalks 625 ILCS 5/11-1002
- Crosswalk 625 ILCS 5/1-113
- Vehicles entering stop crosswalk 625 ILCS 5/11-903
Pedestrians have the right-of-way in crosswalks
Drivers must yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, to children who are close to a school zone crosswalk, to any person with a physical, hearing, or vision disability, and when making a turn at any intersection, including a lawful right turn on red. Additionally:
Pedestrians do not have the right-of-way when crossing the road at any place other than a crosswalk.
Drivers do not have to yield for pedestrians who are waiting to cross the street without using a crosswalk.
- Crossing at other than crosswalks 625 ILCS 5/11-1003
Pedestrian Safety Tips
- Look and listen for cars before crossing
- Look left, right, and left again before crossing
- Cross at corners and intersections, using marked crosswalks whenever possible, to be more visible to drivers
- Make eye contact with drivers approaching intersections before you cross
- When walking after dark, wear bright or reflective colors to help drivers see you
